AVID in White Bear Lake Area Schools
The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program is a nationally recognized approach to ensuring that ALL students are successful in a rigorous curriculum.
White Bear Lake Area Schools began its AVID program in 2010 with 15 freshmen students, and has grown to serve over 350 students districtwide in grades 6-12.
Lakeaires Elementary implemented AVID Elementary in the 2019-2020 school year.
AVID's Mission
AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society. AVID accelerates student learning using evidence-based instructional practices, provides meaningful professional learning for teachers, and acts as a catalyst for systemic change schoolwide.
Practices & Beliefs
The AVID system affects schoolwide change by transforming practices and beliefs in four domains:
-
Instruction: Instruction is how we facilitate learning. Best instructional practices are used to ensure that all students have the opportunity for improved academic performance.
-
Systems: Systems are what we create. Educational systems are examined, developed, refined and aligned to lead to improved academic student performance.
-
Leadership: Leadership is what we do. Educational leaders collaborate to set a common vision and ensure that students have the best educational opportunities in all classrooms.
-
Culture: Culture is what we believe and value. Schools focus on beliefs and behaviors which promote college and career readiness and high expectations for all.
