Talented Bears

Five White Bear Lake Area High School student-athletes who have committed to further their educational and athletic careers at an NCAA Division I or II institution were celebrated by family, friends, coaches and staff during a ceremony in the Union. For more than 60 years, NCAA Division I and Division II schools participated in the NLI (National Letter of Intent) program. This group of students is among the first to now sign a written offer of athletics aid instead of the traditional NLI. The Athletic Grant-in-Aid is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and a college. By signing, the student-athlete commits to attending the college for one year, and in return, the school agrees to provide athletic financial aid for one academic year.

Central Middle School eighth grader Jayden Schmidt completed 100 laps in the PACER fitness test! Hitting the milestone put him the top .01% - .05% of middle school participants. Jayden says he loves endurance sports and led the Middle School’s Cross Country team in both performance and leadership. He stays motivated to train at his best through inspiration by the legacy of White Bear's standout endurance athletes like Eric Gebeke and playing pickleball with his family.

Read more about her achievement in this White Bear Press article. Another WBLAHS student is being recognized for her writing skills. Ayaan Hamza won second place for the Walter Nathan Poetry Initiative at the University of Minnesota. The initiative provides opportunities for CIS literature students to meet an author after reading their book. This year, the class read "They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us" by Hanif Abdurraqib. Not only did Ayaan meet the author, but she read her winning poem with him.

The White Bear Press recently covered a story of collaboration and creativity that helps sixth grader Layla Kleidon play violin in the Mariner Middle School orchestra using a 3-D printed prosthetic device created by Mariner staff members. Layla told the Press, “I was really excited to see it and try it out. I thought it was really cool that they could do that, especially in school! The device helps me be able to hold the bow and actually play, and it’s really nice since I don’t have to do too much to control it.”

Schools and programs throughout the district honored Veteran’s Day with a variety of activities. Some where highlighted in this video issue of "The Week in 62.4 Seconds". At Vadnais Heights Elementary, students gathered with family and friends to discuss the meaning of Veterans Day.  At the Senior Center, attendees gathered for conversations, good company and a performance by the Ukulele Bears to honor the day. Speaking of the Ukulele Bears, the White Bear Press recently highlighted musicians which originated during a conversation in a woodcarving class in 2017. The thriving group hosts jam sessions from 10-11:30 a.m. every Monday.

Academic Calendars

At the November 10, 2025 Regular School Board Meeting, the White Bear Lake Area School Board approved the following calendars:

Both approved calendars include start dates prior to Labor Day, which falls later than usual in both 2026 and 2027. The earlier start provides several benefits, including four instructional days before Labor Day with a four-day holiday weekend, and an earlier end to the school year – June 4, 2027, and June 2, 2028 – rather than mid-June.

In addition to the calendar shift, the late-August start allows for more instructional time before state testing and better alignment of trimester transitions with natural breaks, reducing interruptions in learning. It also allows for better scheduling for extended school year programs for students with special needs and staff.

The approved calendars are available on the district’s website at isd624.org/about/calendar.
