Celebrations and Community

The American Indian Education Program honored four White Bear Lake Area High School seniors during a powwow event, which was highlighted by the White Bear Press. Surrounded by friends, family, and district leaders, students were celebrated for their many achievements. They were presented with a blanket ceremony during which their families came up and wrapped them in a star quilt. Students were also gifted an eagle feather, books and four sacred medicines. Red Lake singers joined the celebration to drum for attendees and one graduating senior, Hezazac Adams, preformed a spotlight grass dance.

The Activities Department honored seniors for their commitment to further their education and take part in sports and activities at their chosen college or university. Classmates, family members, coaches and staff members gathered to celebrate these students who are participating in various NCAA Division I, II, III and junior college programs. 18 high school students who have completed a Future Bear Educator course and are pursuing a career in education were honored during a celebration event which was captured in this video issue of "The Week in 62.4 Seconds". Students were recognized and presented with a Future Bear Educator tassel and pin while their families and supporters looked on. The Future Bear Educators Program provides students with an opportunity to explore a career in education while still in high school. Students can take college-level courses, participate in a work-based learning program and get hands-on experience - all while preparing to become an educator in our community. This innovative program is one of nine Career Pathways opportunities for White Bear students.

Creativity and Research

As a culminating activity for the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) American Revolution unit, fourth grade students at Otter Lake Elementary created an American Revolution History Museum. Students, staff and community members were invited to stroll through the different exhibits which included poster and hands-on projects, creative written works or a living museum exhibit where students dressed up as someone from the American Revolution and gave a presentation.

The Black Student Union group at Mariner Middle School wrapped up their annual community project. This year, students decided to make treasure from old items people had laying around. They were given donated neckties from all over the district, family, friends and community members to make into necklaces. Students made almost 500 necktie necklaces which they gifted to a special person in their life along with Mariner and District Center staff.

Matoska International celebrated young artists in their building during the school's annual Art Show. Families and community members were invited to walk the halls and visit classrooms where student's masterpieces were on display. The event included an art sale and silent auction to raise funds for the Art Enrichment Program next year.

Central Middle School eighth graders visited Podvin Park for a fun activity! They flew kites and launched rockets together. Students spent several weeks constructing kites and learning about the inner workings of rockets in their math and science classes. This project was one of their final assignments of the school year.

Future Planning and Important Lessons

Central Middle School math students explored a financial literacy lesson with guest speakers from Wings Financial. Students were presented with a real-world challenge - budgeting for the future. They were given a career, family and other responsibilities then worked through making tough financial decisions on expenses such as cars, a house, savings and more. Fifth grade students across the district are preparing for the transition from elementary school to middle school. After receiving a warm welcome from their future classmates at Central and Mariner, students toured the buildings, had the opportunity to ask questions and learned what their day-to-day schedules would look like next school year. Students in the district's Early Childhood Programs embraced important lessons. Through an interactive puppet show, students explored different themes around mental health, emotions, inclusion and learning how to be kind to one another. Butterflies were released at North Star Elementary by the first and second grade studio! Over the past few weeks, students studied the life cycle of butterflies learning about the different phases and development. They also watched as the insect grew from a caterpillar into a butterfly. The activity was captured in this video issue of "The Week in 62.4 Seconds".

District Kudos

WBLAHS Golf Coach Craig Nasvik was recently highlighted in a Neighborhood Sports Network Prep Update video. The feature covers his work as a coach, the accolades he's received, including being nominated for National Golf Coach of the Year and the connections he makes with students.

WBLAHS has announced the hiring of Jeremy Post as the new Head Coach of the Boys’ Basketball program. Post brings an outstanding resume of coaching success, leadership, and commitment to student-athletes to the role. Since 2006, he has served as the Head Girls’ Basketball Coach at WBLAHS, building one of the premier programs in the state.

 Activities Updates

The Boys' Golf Team placed fourth in the SEC Championship tournament with golfer Easton Fiddle placing fourth overall. Golf Coach Craig Nasvik was recently featured in a Neighborhood Sports Network Prep Update video for his numerous accolades including being named a finalist for National Golf Coach of the Year. The Baseball Team ended their regular season play with a win over Irondale 3-1. The Girls Lacrosse Team also secured a win over Blake during their last regular season game before playoffs begin. The Boys Lacrosse Team defeated Mahtomedi 10-9 to end their regular season play. Jeremy Post has been named the new head coach for the Boys' Basketball program. The Girls' Track & Field Team placed fifth out of ten teams at the final SEC meet of the regular season. School Board Student Recognition

During the May 11 School Board Regular Meeting, School Board members celebrated the achievements of middle school students who participated in History Day both at the state and national-level along with high school students for their accomplishments in the Hennepin Arts Spotlight Showcase. Watch the Student Recognition video.

White Bear Lake Area School District - ISD 624 Logo

White Bear Lake Area Schools has once again earned top honors for financial reporting, marking the 25th consecutive year the district has received both the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting and the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting.

At the September Regular School Board Meeting, the School Board welcomed the 2025-26 School Board Student Representatives: WBLAHS senior Thomas Reese and Alternate Student Representative WBLAHS junior Lillian Johnson.

Greta Thun has been hired to serve as Educator on Special Assignment, a new role on the district-wide Teaching and Learning team that will provide instructional leadership through collaboration with principals and educators to support student math outcomes and the implementation of the district’s strategic plan.

Lindsey Samec has been hired to serve as Principal on Special Assignment, a role on the district-wide Teaching and Learning team that will become open in July when Cynthia Mueller leaves White Bear to become Director of Teaching and Learning with Buffalo-Hanover-Montrose Schools.
