Exciting Honors

More than 50 high school students were celebrated last week during a Pinning Ceremony for completing the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program within the Health and Wellness Career Pathway program. Through hard work both in the classroom and during hands-on clinical experiences, these students gained a valuable credential in the field of healthcare and toward their future careers. Their ceremony was highlighted in a recent video issue if "The Week in 62.4 Seconds".

The high school’s fall musical, “Cinderella,” recently heard word that they received multiple accolades through the Hennepin Arts Spotlight Awards program. As part of that recognition, the cast and members of the crew and pit orchestra will have the opportunity to perform on the State Theatre stage in June. The award of "Outstanding" was given in the following categories: Achievement in Musical Theatre, Overall Technical Production, Overall Performance, Ensemble Performance, Ensemble Dance Performance, Ensemble Vocal Performance, Student Orchestra and Run Crew. Individual students received numerous outstanding and honorable mention honors. See the complete listing of awards here.

This year’s musical was attended by 4000 students, staff, family and community members over the course of its performances. This is the highest attendance we’ve ever had for a fall musical, and it was made possible by the new 845-seat Performing Arts Center addition at the high school. The community’s support of the 2019 bond referendum continues to benefit our students in countless ways.

Connections and Collaboration

Oneka Elementary students and staff enjoyed a special performance from the bluegrass music ensemble group: Steam Machine. The trio of musicians explained a brief history of bluegrass styled music, played several songs, and took time to explain each of their instruments (fiddle, guitar and banjo) and the different roles each brings to the group. They also demonstrated the style of dance that goes along with bluegrass music (typically square dance) and taught the whole school some simple stepping and clapping beats.

Third graders at Birch Lake Elementary started their unit on light and sound. For this activity, students used tuning forks to see vibrations in different environments. They tested this by hitting the fork on different objects, like a table, then putting it in water. Students also shared their observations with classmates. Watch their lesson come to life in a recent video issue of "The Week in 62.4 Seconds".

Mariner Middle School students in French class played a strategy game where they could also practice their jungle creatures vocabulary words. Everyone sat in a circle and two students were selected to be the tigers. Their goal was to eliminate the entire class before anyone could figure out it was them. Students had so much fun guessing and using their speech skills to figure out who were the tigers.

North Star Elementary students and staff enjoyed taking part in Market Day! The fun, engaging project builds financial literacy, creativity, and confidence all while letting students experience what it’s like to be an entrepreneur for a day!

Students in the Explorations Program at Lincoln Elementary are putting the scientific method into action! They investigated different forces of motions then tested their research with an experiment that was captured in a recent video issue of "The Week in 62.4 Seconds". Students used magnets to make a paper clip float in the air using balanced forces and predicted if different objects would make a magnetic force happen.

Central Middle School eighth grade WEB leaders (where everyone belongs) organized and led a fun Thanksgiving themed game for sixth graders focused on the importance of team work. They were split into groups and had to solve a puzzle where all the words were spelt out using emojis. Throughout the year, WEB leaders gather with sixth graders to provide meaningful connections and support.

Otter Lake Elementary Student Ambassadors spent time shopping for families in need. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, staff and Otter Lake families, students raised money to shop for toys to donate to the White Bear Lake Lions Club Toy Shelf. The group split up and shopped for a specific age group, working together to pick out the perfect toys!

Academic Calendars

At the November 10, 2025 Regular School Board Meeting, the White Bear Lake Area School Board approved the following calendars:

Both approved calendars include start dates prior to Labor Day, which falls later than usual in both 2026 and 2027. The earlier start provides several benefits, including four instructional days before Labor Day with a four-day holiday weekend, and an earlier end to the school year – June 4, 2027, and June 2, 2028 – rather than mid-June.

In addition to the calendar shift, the late-August start allows for more instructional time before state testing and better alignment of trimester transitions with natural breaks, reducing interruptions in learning. It also allows for better scheduling for extended school year programs for students with special needs and staff.

The approved calendars are available on the district’s website at isd624.org/about/calendar.
