School Board recognizes nationally certified teachers

At the February 12, 2018 Regular meeting, the White Bear Lake Area School Board recognized four district teachers who recently achieved National Board Certification. This is a voluntary advanced teaching credential that goes beyond state licensure and is a way for teachers to deepen their instructional practice and develop leadership in their field.

Four White Bear Lake Area School district teachers stand while being recognized at a School Board meeting.New nationally certified teachers:
  • Steve Bates - a first grade teacher at Hugo Elementary School. He certified in the area of Early Childhood Generalist.
  • Rita Leonard - a Health Educator at South Campus High School. She certified in Health Education at the Early Adolescence Through Young Adulthood level
  • Keith Steadland - a Science teacher at North Campus High School.  He certified in the area of Science at the Early Adolescence level
  • Deb Thibault - a literacy coach at Hugo and Oneka Elementary Schools. She certified in the area of Literacy: Reading–Language Arts, at the Early and Middle Childhood level.

Teachers use written commentary, student work evidence, and video to demonstrate clear, consistent, and concise evidence of reaching accomplished teaching standards set by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. There are three classroom-based performance assessments in addition to an in-depth assessment of content knowledge performed at a testing center. Teachers complete these assessments in three to four years while being supported by the White Bear Lake Area Schools National Board Cohort. Our district cohort works to provide professional development to support candidates.

Only 460 Minnesota teachers are national board certified. Nineteen Minnesota teachers earned certification this year, with the four White Bear Lake Area Schools teachers representing 21% of this year's statewide group. Four additional White Bear teachers have previously achieved certification: Abbi Case, Deb Schmidt, Allison Theissen, and Merrily Wolters.
