At the May 8, 2017 School Board meeting, the White Bear Lake Area School Board approved a principal contract offered to candidate Jonathan Luknic for the Birch Lake Elementary principal position. Mr. Luknic currently serves as principal at Pillsbury Elementary School in Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS). Luknic's appointment in White Bear is set to begin this summer.

Mr. Luknic's experience includes leadership roles at MSP and the Minnesota Department of Education. He also served as a teacher for English Language Learners. His leadership qualities align with the profile established from parent and staff input that prioritized a focus on relationships, instruction and equity.

"I'm so excited to be joining the learning community at Birch Lake Elementary as Principal," Luknic said. "I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and learning about all of the rich traditions that make the school special. I'm also humbled by the opportunity to lead the community forward with a shared vision built on the foundation of transparency and collaboration."

In the coming weeks, Luknic will visit to tour Birch and meet with staff, parents and students. "I see these visits as an important step to get to know the school community better and to share some information about my values and approach to leadership," said Luknic.

Luknic's appointment is set to begin July 1, with Interim Principal Brian Morris remaining in the role until the end of the school year.
