School Board approves 2017-18 academic calendar

For Immediate Release: March 10, 2017
WBLAS Contact: Marisa Vette, 651-407-7695, marisa.vette@isd624.org

White Bear Lake, Minn. - At the March 6, 2017 Regular Meeting, the White Bear Lake Area School Board approved the 2017-18 academic calendar.

The approved 2017-18 calendar includes staggered "first day" experiences for secondary, elementary and kindergarten students. Students in grades 6-12 will begin the school year on Tuesday, September 5. The first day of the year for students in grades 1-5 will be Wednesday, September 6, and kindergarten students will begin school on Thursday, September 7.

The innovative approach to the beginning of the year for our elementary students will allow for one-on-one "Welcome Back" conferences to be scheduled with elementary families on Wednesday, August 30 and Tuesday, September 5. Students will complete universal assessments typically given during the school day and families will meet individually with their child's assigned teacher, connect with food service, complete bus safety training and fulfill other obligations typically completed at the beginning of the year.  Our goal is to have families have an individualized experience as their child transitions to a new teacher or school.

"With this new calendar approach, we were able to build upon the success of the Welcome Back conference process we implemented last fall," said Sara Paul, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning. "Both teachers and families found the one-to-one time at the beginning of the year very valuable, and we look forward to helping all of our elementary students hit the ground running once again this September."

Parents were given the opportunity to provide feedback last fall regarding their overall experience of Welcome Back conferences through a survey. Responses were overwhelmingly positive and indicated this process is a step in the right direction in regards to what families are in need of at the beginning of each school year.

This changed approach to the calendar also allows for additional time for teacher planning and collaboration throughout the school year. This time will help us align PK-12 instruction to continuously improve the learning experience for our students.

The School Board also approved a 2018-19 calendar that has basic information including first/last days of school, break-related non-school days and graduation.
