Water Symposium Video Contest (K-5)
Theme: Water Conservation
Background: WBLAS and Race 2 Reduce have partnered to develop an educational platform to help students gain awareness of the need for water conservation in their community, realize their impact, and empower them to become leaders of change.
Challenge: Create a 30-60 second Public Service Announcement (PSA) video that educates and motivates the public to use water more efficiently.
Participants: Any student in District 624 from grades K-5 can submit a video. Students can work together in groups or on their own. Limit ONE entry per person. Teachers, parents and community members are encouraged to be resources, but the project must be student work (scripts, camera work, editing and production). Outside help must be limited to showing students how to do a task while letting them perform the task.
The theme of the video should be related to water conservation but students are encouraged to . . .
The videos should be 30-60 seconds in length.

Voting and Prizes:
Videos must be submitted by May 22, 2017.
Prizes - 1st Place ($100), 2nd Place ($75) and 3rd Place ($50)
The top three videos will be selected by the judges prior to the June 3rd Water Symposium.
The finalists (top three) will have an opportunity to present their videos at the Water Symposium on June 3rd (11:30-12:00).
Water Symposium participants will vote to determine the top prizes.
Videos will be judged based on the following equally weighted categories:
Educational content (accuracy of facts and information)
Does your video empower the audience to take action?
Relation to the water conservation theme
Appropriateness (family friendly content)
Right length and format: students do not need to use expensive recording equipment to make a video. Any kind of recording equipment can be used from smartphones, to iPads to digital cameras.

Would you love to help children grow their reading or math skills and succeed in school? If your answer is yes, you can serve as a tutor with Minnesota Reading Corps or Minnesota Math Corps at Willow Lane Elementary!
As a Literacy Tutor or Math Enrichment Tutor, you'll use research-proven strategies to help Willow Lane students gain the reading or math skills they need to thrive in school and in life.
Tutors come from many backgrounds and include recent high school and college grads, career changers, stay-at-home parents, and retirees. With extensive training, support from onsite coaches, and evidence-based strategies, Reading Corps and Math Corps tutors are well-equipped to change lives. Additionally, Reading Corps and Math Corps tutors may earn a living allowance, education award, and federal student loan forbearance for their service.
Last year, Minnesota Reading Corps and Minnesota Math Corps provided direct services to more than 30,000 children in more than 700 sites across the state. To learn how you, too, can make a difference as a Reading Corps or Math Corps tutor in 2017-18 at Willow Lane, visit www.readingandmath.net.

New Lunch Menu Website

White Bear Lake School District has created a new interactive breakfast and lunch menu that you can access through the internet. Families can now view the menu's for any school in the District. And also see all the nutrition information for each item.
Students will not be bringing home a paper copy of the lunch menu. For those of you that do not have internet access or do not have access to a printer please let your child's teacher know and they will continue to send one home each month.

Schoology Makes Life Easier
Schoology is the Learning Management System where teachers post assignments, class documents, resources and calendar events with upcoming projects. This year all White Bear teachers will have a presence on Schoology. On Schoology you will find folders for all subjects with important worksheets, handouts, powerpoints, spelling lists etc. Teachers may also include updates about the day or week, making schoology an excellent way to stay informed about what is happening in your child's classroom.
Schoology also serves as a digital extension of the classroom allowing for online discussion of course content, submission of assignments and more. Your child can sign in at www.ISD624.com

Dear Willow Lane Families,
KARE 11: Cool in School
More students than EVER are participating in the Willow Lane Orchestra (the
ONLY orchestra in White Bear Lake), and we have run out of instruments!
If you or anyone you know wishes to donate a violin, viola, or cello in ANY
condition, please have them contact Willow Lane as soon as possible! We will also
accept monetary donations to cover the cost of new instruments.
These donations are entirely tax-deductible.
Checks may be made out to ISD624.
